Enabling Digital Transformation Across a National Mining Portfolio

MPX partnered with a leading global resources company to develop a comprehensive technical case study and strategic business case for a national regulatory authority, substantiating spectrum requirements for next-generation autonomous operations across its entire Australian portfolio of surface and underground mines.
The Problem
A leading global resources company needed to secure specific spectrum allocations to enable its portfolio-wide digital transformation roadmap. This required a robust, evidence-based submission to a national regulatory authority.
The submission had to demonstrate that future autonomous and automated processes are critically dependent on advanced, high-capacity private wireless networks across all its diverse operational sites.
Our scope was to develop the functional and technical case study, intricate data models, and strategic business case to prove the necessity of this spectrum for demanding applications operating in the ultra-high band.
The Result
The MPX team developed intricate data models for an industrial private LTE network. We constructed sophisticated utilisation simulation models that validated network capacity requirements across the client's full range of mining operations—encompassing all aboveground, underground, pit-to-port, and railway logistics.
A significant component was a forward-looking technology model for the entire portfolio, projecting the integration and evolution of 4G, 5G, and 6G technologies over a 2-to-10-year lifecycle. These models specifically addressed processes pivotal to mine automation, autonomy, and sustainable (green) mining practices.
We constructed a comprehensive business case with simulation models reflecting both current and future states, informed by data and forecast projections. This provided a versatile and forward-looking analysis aligned with the client's evolving technological and operational needs.
Strategic Regulatory Support
Delivered a comprehensive, evidence-based case for regulatory submission

Future-State Modelling
Projected technology evolution (4G/5G/6G) over a 10-year lifecycle for the entire asset portfolio

Complex Simulation
Modelled high-demand applications across all operational types (pit-to-port, surface, and underground)

Data-Driven Business Case
Provided versatile analysis of current and future-state operational needs

Benefits
This strategic work provided the client with a robust, data-driven foundation to support its regulatory engagement. The analysis clearly articulated the critical link between dedicated spectrum and the future of safe, sustainable, and autonomous mining across its national footprint, positioning the client to execute its long-term digital transformation.
Key Responsibilities & Skillsets
Program identification and preparation services for digital transformation, including readiness planning.
The planning and development of strategic business goals, including holistic digital transformation, ICT technical architecture, enterprise architecture, and migration plans/strategies.
ICT program and project specification and selection (e.g. assistance in forming an ICT solution statement of requirements).
Research and analysis into best practices, industry trends and strategic advice based on findings.
Design and development of strategies to manage risks, including business change management and disaster recovery planning.
Assistance in relation to procurement, transition, integration and delivery of ICT services.
Development of ICT business cases.
Achievements
Delivered a highly complex, multi-faceted technical and business case under a unified strategy.
Successfully translated complex operational requirements for automation and autonomy across a national portfolio into clear, defensible data models.
Provided a forward-looking analysis that aligns with evolving technological and operational needs in the mining sector.
Operated as a key strategic partner, developing holistic digital transformation and ICT architecture plans.
